Jan and Zdeněk Svěrák, the father and son duo behind the Oscar-winning Kolya
, have teamed up to adapt Zdeněk Svěrák’s autobiographical novel set during WWII. A prequel to their Oscar-nominated Elementary School,
the film follows the adventures of eight-year-old Eda and his family forced to move from Prague to rural exile. Unlike his parents Eda doesn’t perceive the danger of the times and quickly adapts to country life with war providing mysterious adventures. Joining a bunch of local boys he spends his days walking barefoot, notices girls for the first time and discovers both deep family secrets and his own bravery. Evocative cinematography and music contribute to this beautiful and heartfelt piece of nostalgia shot from a little boy’s perspective.
