‘A rare opportunity to experience this stunning 5+-hour epic film directed by Sergey Gerasimov telling the story of the lives of the Cossacks in a village in Southern Russia between 1912 and 1922 – adapted from one of the classics of early Soviet literature (author Mikhail Sholokhov.eventually won the Nobel Prize for Literature primarily for this four-part epic).
The leading character Grigori Melekhov is a rugged Cossack, who is torn between his first and true love Aksiniya, and his wife Natalya. Grigori Melekhov’s personal life is shown as a rough journey through the experience of World War One, the Russian Revolution, and the following Civil War. The Cossacks are shown as traditional farmers and warriors, who are suffering through the most dramatic events in the history of Russia.
“A real large scale cinematic accomplishment about love and war, in the early 20th century”
“…elevated by historical context and exemplary craftsmanship.”‘ (Dash Arts)
